Tin Man (Hickory)
Hickory is the third farmhand. The same actor that plays Hickory will also play the Tin Man in Oz. The Tin Man lacks a heart. He/she is kind, sweet, and nurturing. The actor playing this part has to have good body control and be full of heart.
Either a boy or a girl can successfully play this role.
Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow discover the Tin Man, rusted solid. It’s hard for him to speak.
Dorothy
Why, it’s a man! A man made out of tin!
Tin Man
Oilcan…oilcan…
Dorothy
Did he say something?
Tin Man
Oilcan…
Scarecrow
Oilcan what?
Dorothy
Oilcan? Here it is! Where do you want t be oiled first?
Tin Man
My mouth…my mouth!
Scarecrow
He said his mouth.
Dorothy
Here you go!
Dorothy oils the Tin Man’s mouth.
Dorothy
How’s that?
Tin Man
I can talk again!
Dorothy
Oh, goodness! How did you ever get like this?
Tin Man
Well, about a year ago I was chopping that tree, minding my own business, when suddenly it started to rain and right in the middle of a chop, I was rusted solid.
And I’ve ben that way ever since.
Dorothy
Well, you’re perfect now.
Tin Man
Perfect? Bang on my chest if you think I’m perfect. Go ahead! Bang on it!
Dorothy bangs on his chest.
Scarecrow
Beautiful! What an echo!
Tin Man
It’s empty. The tinsmith forgot to give me a heart.
Dorothy
No heart?
Tin Man
No heart. All hollow.
Dorothy
Why don’t you come to Emerald City with us and ask the Wizard of Oz for a heart?
Tin Man
Why, that’s a long and dangerous journey. And it might rain on the way.
Dorothy
I’ll keep the oilcan handy.
Tin Man
Well, suppose the Wizard wouldn’t get me one when we got there?
Dorothy
Oh, but he will! He must! We’ve come such a long way already.
