The Wizard Of Oz
Characters
Principal Characters
Dorothy Gale
A sweet, innocent young lady who has a streak of boldness. She lives on a farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry but dreams of escaping to a far-off place where she does not get into so much trouble. She and her dog, Toto, are inseparable. She is a bit outspoken and headstrong, but dearly loves her family and friends. Dorothy needs to be a strong vocalist and a good dancer.
Scarecrow (Hunk)
Hunk is one of the three farmhands who offers Dorothy advice about how to deal with Miss Gulch, “You ain’t using your head about Miss Gulch. Think you didn’t have any brains at all.” The same actor that plays Hunk will also play the Scarecrow in Oz. Both characters talk about being smart and having a brain. The Scarecrow is also quite clumsy, so the actor will need to have good body control.
Either a boy or a girl can successfully play this role.
Lion (Zeke)
Zeke is another farmhand who talks to Dorothy about her problems, advising her to just “have a little courage”. The same actor that plays Zeke will also play the Lion in Oz. The Lion lacks courage. Although he will act tough from time to time, his true fearful self comes out in any scary situation. The actor who plays the Lion needs to have good comic timing and is not afraid to take risks.
Either a boy or a girl can successfully play this role.
Tin Man (Hickory)
Hickory is the third farmhand. The same actor that plays Hickory will also play the Tin Man in Oz. The Tin Man lacks a heart. He/she is kind, sweet, and nurturing. The actor playing this part has to have good body control and be full of heart.
Either a boy or a girl can successfully play this role.
Wicked Witch of the West (Miss Gulch)
Miss Gulch is a well-off neighbor of the Gales. She is cold-hearted and hates Toto for getting into her garden. As the Wicked Witch of the West she seeks revenge on Dorothy. The actor playing this role needs strong stage presence, a flair for the dramatic, and a wicked cackle!
Toto
Toto is Dorothy’s beloved dog. The actor playing this role needs to be energetic, bark with expression, and have the stamina to crawl around as a dog through-out the entire show.
Wizard of Oz (Professor Marvel)
Professor Marvel is a traveling salesman whose career of the moment is fortune telling. He is a bit of a con man; however, he has a good heart. Similarly, his Oz counterpart, the Wizard, is a con man with a good heart as well. The actor playing this role needs to have strong, commanding voice and be able to memorize a great deal of dialogue.
Ensemble
(Speaking and some singing roles)
Ensemble roles will be double cast as either Lady in Rocking Chair, Cow, People in Rowboat, Crows, Apple Trees, Mayor, Coroner, Barrister, Winged Monkeys, Leader of the Winkies, Winkie Guards and Jitterbugs.

Glinda is the Good Witch of the North who guides Dorothy in her journey through Oz. The actor playing Glinda should have a delicate, graceful manner. She is the mother figure to Dorothy and the Munchkins.
Aunt Em
