Guard
He guards the Wizards chamber. He changes from harshness to sympathy upon hearing Dorothy cry.
Dorothy
If you please, sir. Could you direct us to the Wizard? We’d like to see him, all four of us.
Guard
Nobody can see the Great Oz! Not nobody, not no how!
Dorothy
Oh, but we must!
Lion
I got a permanent for the occasion.
Guard
Not nobody! Not no how!
Scarecrow
But she’s Dorothy!
Guard
The Witch’s Dorothy? Well, that makes a difference.
Just wait here, I’ll announce you at once.
(He exits and then reenters)
Guard
Go on home! The Wizard says go away!
Dorothy
And I thought I was on my way home!
Tin Man
Don’t cry, Dorothy!
Dorothy
Auntie Em was so good to me and I never appreciated it- running away and hurting her feelings. Oh, I’ll never forgive myself! Never!
Guard
Please don’t cry any more. I’ll get you into the Wizard somehow. Come on. I had an Aunt Em myself once.
